Emmys 2020: ‘Schitt’s Creek’ wins first seven Emmy wins of the night

During his opening monologue of the 2020 Emmys, Jimmy Kimmel joked that the ABC censors ordered that the name of multiple nominee “Schitt’s Creek” be flashed on screen every time the show was mentioned.

Just, you know, so no one at home got the wrong idea about what word was being said.

“HBO can show us a big blue penis, no problem,” Kimmel joked in reference to a scene in the nominated series “Watchmen.” I can’t say the word ‘Schitt’s Creek’ with a ‘c’.”

It’s a good thing the censors didn’t really issue that edict, because by the end of the first hour of the show “Schitt’s Creek” had swept the top comedy categories, winning a remarkable seven consecutive Emmys before any other nominee had won any.

Catherine O’Hara was the first to win, taking best actress in a comedy series for her role as the hilariously over-the-top aging actress Moira Rose. Eugene Levy, her TV husband Johnny Rose, won best actor next.

Then it was time for Daniel Levy, Eugene Levy’s real-life son and as David Rose, his TV son, too — to nab his own personal hat trick of Emmys.

Daniel Levy won for outstanding writing in a comedy series. Then he and Andrew Cividino won for best direction.

When best supporting actor in a comedy series came up — and Levy was again a nominee — you had to think the streak would end, but no, it turns out this is “Schitt’s Creek” night, and Levy’s in particular.

“Oh no, oh no, OK, the Internet’s about the turn on me,” Levy said after hugging his dad and walking again the microphone inside the party tent where the “Schitt’s Creek” nominees had gathered together to watch the show.

“I would not be here if it weren’t for the six-year master class let by two magnificent minds, my dad, Eugene Levy, and the magnificent Catharine O’Hara,” he said. “As actors, we were given the safety and security to do what we wanted and to try and to experiment and to grow.”

After a shoutout to Annie Murphy, who played his sister and the fourth Rose on “Schitt’s Creek,” he wrapped up with one more message of gratitude.

“To play David Rose, this has been the greatest experience in my life.”

Then it was Murphy’s turn, winning best-supporting actress for her work as Alexis Rose, and prompting Kimmel to joke that at this point “Schitt’s Creek” had won “17 Emmys, two Peabodys, and I think, a Soul Train Award.”

Now it was time for best comedy series and you had to know what was coming. First, a round of celebrity introductions of nominated shows — Shaquille O’Neal doing the honors for “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Zoey Deschanel playing that part for “Dead To Me,” and eventually Elton John introducing “Schitt’s Creek.”

Which won, of course, bringing father and son back to the microphone.

“Our show at its core is about the transformational power of love and acceptance,” Daniel Levy said. “For any of you have not registered to vote, please do so, and then go out and vote. Because that is the only way we are going to have love and acceptance.”
