Fifty years ago, in 1970, the Japanese American community gifted a garden and tea house to the people of Orange County.
On Tuesday, Nov. 10, that gift was rededicated during a small ceremony held in the shadow of the Superior Court building in Santa Ana.
The Orange County Japanese Garden and Tea House today, as it did 50 years ago, conveys the message of friendship and a tribute to the Japanese heritage, OC Supervisor Andrew Do said during the ceremony.

“This tea house is a tribute to the Japanese American farmers, families and residents whose agricultural businesses helped build Orange County into what it is today,” he said.
Following World War II and the internment of Japanese Americans, many returned to Orange County to restart their lives.
The garden project was funded in 1969 by $50,000 in donations from more than 600 Japanese American families and organizations in Orange County.
The money was raised by appealing to the freedoms and opportunities that Japanese Americans were afforded in Orange County.
And the community responded.
