When a high school athlete accepts a college scholarship, that commitment brings relief.
It means the recruiting process is almost complete.
When the athlete signs the letter of intent, the word “almost” can be removed from the sentence.
Mater Dei basketball 6-8 senior forward Wilhelm Breidenbach signed his letter of intent with Nebraska on Wednesday, the first day of the national letter of intent signing period.
“It felt good,” Breidenbach said about signing the document at Mater Dei’s signing festivities that included 30 signees including Breidenbach’s basketball teammates Nick Davidson, who signed with Nevada, and USC signee Harry Hornery.
“When I committed that was a relief that the recruiting process was done,” Breidenbach said. “Signing officially marked the whole thing as over and I can start getting prepared for the next step.”
The next step would be a senior season that might not happen. The 2020-21 high school sports year has been delayed by COVID-19 to start in December for some sports, January for others. CIF Southern Section basketball, usually played from late November to late March, will start March 12.
Mater Dei has a team playing on the club circuit. The Monarchs, going by the “Big Red” name that has been an offseason moniker for them for many years, has played at Ladera Sports Center and in Phoenix. Another tournament in Phoenix is upcoming, with perhaps more on the way.
