Mission Viejo’s Will Gallant beats Olympian Jordan Wilimovsky in 1,500 free to close U.S. Open

Mission Viejo Nadadores coach Mark Schubert predicted that Will Gallant would deliver a “spectacular” 1,500-meter freestyle Saturday to close out the U.S. Open in Irvine.

The legendary coach indeed hit the mark with the 19-year-old from Indiana University.

Gallant handled top-seeded and two-time Olympian Jordan Wilimovsky by 12 seconds to capture swimming’s version of the mile at the Woollett Aquatics Center.

Gallant clocked a lifetime-best time of 15 minutes, 18.39 seconds to post the fastest time in Irvine. The 26-year-old Wilimovsky, a two-time Olympian in open water, outdueled Gallant in the 800 free on Thursday but touched a distant second in 15:30.38.

“I think he can make the finals at the Olympic Trials in the 1,500,” Schubert said of Gallant, who joined the Nadadores during the summer. “He has the work ethic and ability to break 15 minutes.”

The U.S. Open is combining the results from nine other sites across the nation to crown a winner amid the coronavirus pandemic. Gallant took second overall to U.S. national teamer Robert Finke, who blazed a 15:09.14 in Sarasota, Fla

U.S. national team member and top-seeded Erica Sullivan of Nevada’s Sandpipers club finished the meet strong by taking the overall title in the women’s 1,500 with a 16:04.37 in Irvine.

USC’s Isabelle Odgers (Novaquatics/Santa Margarita High) finished second in the 200 breaststroke overall with a 2:28.67, about a second off Madisyn Cox racing in San Antonio, Texas.
