IRVINE — Swimming competition again had a unique home under the lights at the Woollett Aquatics Center on Friday.

Bolstered by social distancing between three pools, plenty of chlorine and safety clearances from Orange County health officials, USA Swimming’s U.S. Open delivered an impressive display of young talent amid the pandemic.

Several up-and-coming girls highlighted the second day of the meet, recording lifetime-best times and a few qualifying times for the U.S. Olympic Trials next year.

“The safest place to be for youth sports has got to be in a pool, especially when you’re in an outdoor environment,” said Ken LaMont, coach of the host Novaquatics club.

High school and youth sports across the state have been limited to physical conditioning and skill training since Aug. 3. But the downsized meet in Irvine – one of nine satellite sites across the nation for the U.S. Open – is following multiple safety guidelines and received an inspection earlier this week from the Orange County Health Care Agency.

Meet director Kim Hoesterey said Friday that county health director Dr. Clayton Chau and Dr. Matthew Zahn, director of the agency’s communicable disease control division, toured the complex with representatives of Woollett and the city of Irvine.

“They said we’re good to go, we met all the criteria,” Hoesterey said.

USC freshman Kaitlyn Dobler won a tight 100-meter breaststroke in 1 minute, 8.77 seconds, out-touching Emma Weber, a 16-year-old with the University of Denver Hilltoppers, by six one-hundredths of a second. The winning touch was good for sixth overall.

“I was just excited to compete,” said Dobler, in her first meet since March. “Especially close races, I really missed that, and I didn’t realize how much I missed it until I was doing it.”

Arabella Sims, a 15-year-old with Nevada’s Sandpipers club, stayed hot by clocking the fastest 200 freestyle of the night, a lifetime-best time of 1:59.93 that was good for fifth overall. The time held off a 2:00.58 from Justina Kozan of the Mission Viejo Nadadores.

SOCAL’s Samantha Pearson placed third with a 2:02.95. Earlier in the day, the former Foothill High standout earned her Olympic Trials cut in the 200 individual medley.

Sims’ teammate Kathryn Grimes, 14, provided another highlight during the evening session by posting the fastest time in the 400 individual medley with a 4:47.58.
