The iconic “Live Poultry Fresh Killed” sign that hung outside Mayflower Poultry in Cambridge, MA for more than 75 years sold for $14,500 at auction to a local business association, the Boston Herald reports.
The bidding for the 7-ft.-tall yellow chicken sign started at $5,000. The Cambridge business association emerged as the high bidder and said it will keep the sign in town for everyone to enjoy.
“There was a big cheer among all the local people, and everyone seemed happy it was going to remain,” auctioneer Michael Saperstein of Paul E. Saperstein Auctioneers & Appraisers told the outlet.
About 30 people attended the in-person auction, and another 15 placed bids online. Both Saperstein and Mayfield Poultry’s owner, Jim Gould, will donate proceeds from the auction to a charity called Food For Free.
